The California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Taskforce (CHART) presented St. Joseph Hospital with a fourth consecutive "Certificate of Excellence" based on quality data through August 2011. St. Joseph Hospital was the only hospital in Orange County to achieve this distinction and ranked second in the state of California. For more information click here.

Consumer Reports' 2012 study on hospital safety ranked St. Joseph Hospital number one in Orange County and among the top 20 hospitals in California. The study focused on: infections, readmissions, communication, CT scanning, complications and mortality.

In the October 2010 issue of Consumer Reports, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons based at St. Joseph Hospital were listed as one of the nation's top 50 groups, one of the three top groups in California, and were the only group in Orange County named. This was the first ever rating of doctors in Consumer Reports. The rating was achieved because of both quality of care and transparency in public outcome data reporting.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized St. Joseph Hospital as one of the top 20 hospitals in Los Angeles/ Orange County for 2012, providing clinical excellence in seven specialties. (more)

NCI Community The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment Program Participation

Selected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to participate in its Community Cancer Centers Pilot Program (NCCCP). St. Joseph Hospital was the only hospital on the West Coast named to participate in this prestigious program. (more)

In 2011, St. Joseph Hospital was named among the top 60 hospitals in the nation for its outstanding orthopedic program by Becker's Hospital Review. According to Becker's St. Joseph Hospital's Orthopedic Program exhibits excellence in orthopedics, quality of service, outstanding local and national reputation and high volume of orthopedic cases.

St. Joseph Hospital has been named one of Orange County's most trusted brands in 2010 and 2011, based on an independent survey of consumer attitudes and opinions conducted by The Values Institute at Santa Ana-based DGWB Advertising and Communications and OC METRO. (more)

St. Joseph Hospital is an IHI Mentor Hospital that provides support, advice, clinical expertise, and tips to hospitals seeking help with the following quality improvement and clinical implementation efforts: Rapid Response Systems and Condition H, Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, and Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections.

St. Joseph Hospital's Palliative Care Program received a Citation of Honor from the Circle of Life Award® through the American Hospital Association for integrating the program across all care settings, as well as involving patients and family members in the core process and program design. The hospital credits the success of its Palliative Care Program to it multidisciplinary team approach to care.

Nearly 100 physicians on the St. Joseph Hospital Medical Staff were named by the Orange County Medical Association and recognized in Orange Coast magazine as 2012 Physicians of Excellence for their achievements. (more)

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has developed a comprehensive rating system to compare the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. In the most recent analysis of data covering January 1, 2009 through December 21, 2011, the cardiac surgery performance at St. Joseph Hospital was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS 3-star rating. According to STS data covering this time period, St. Joseph Hospital placed in the top 3.2 percent of hospitals in the United States for aortic valve replacement procedures.

St. Joseph Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology Foundation's NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2012 – one of only 164 hospitals nationwide to do so. The award recognizes the hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients, and signifies that St. Joseph Hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

St. Joseph Hospital was one of only 37 hospitals and healthcare facilities honored by HHS for efforts to prevent – and eventually eliminate – healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), specifically infections in critical care settings. St. Joseph Hospital presented at a national conference in May 2012 on its ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention program. The hospital has not had a VAP for a record 65 months.

St. Joseph Hospital earned the 2012 Women's Choice Award by WomenCertified®. This award signifies that the hospital demonstrates extraordinary service in meeting the needs of women and their families.

In 2009 St. Joseph Hospital underwent a rigorous survey to become Orange County's first hospital and one of just 80 nationwide designated "Baby Friendly." In 2012, St. Joseph Hospital has the highest percentage of new moms who breastfeed exclusively than any other hospital in Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside and San Bernardino, according to the Hospital Breastfeeding Rates Report released by California WIC Association and the UC Davis Human Lactation Center. Breastfeeding support is an essential part of high quality maternal care. (more)

St. Joseph Hospital's demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery led the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) to name St. Joseph Hospital a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. (more)

St. Joseph Hospital is an accredited Chest Pain Center. Accreditation demonstrates a commitment to improve quality outcomes by using a team approach and best practices, from preventive community teaching to recognizing and responding to a heart attack through hospital discharge and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

In 2009 The Joint Commission presented St. Joseph Hospital with a "Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers." Also in 2009 the Orange County Health Care Agency designated St. Joseph Hospital as one of six Orange County hospitals named as Stroke-Neurology Receiving Centers. This ensures 24-hour availability of neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, nursing and emergency medicine physicians who are experts in caring for stroke patients. This certification is in addition to the hospital's accreditation by the Joint Commission.

St. Joseph Hospital was recognized as a Top Performer in 2011 for excelling in high value care delivery as part of the Premier Healthcare Alliance QUEST®: High Performing Hospitals collaborative. The hospital exceeded the top performance threshold in three areas.
