The Society of Thoracic Surgeons recently developed a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. In the analysis of data periods covering July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2008, St. Joseph Hospital’s Cardiac Surgery program has maintained the highest 3-star rating – an achievement reached by only 12% of the nation’s hospitals with open heart surgery programs. |

In 2008 St. Joseph Hospital was awarded a three-year Accreditation with Commendation from The American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer, the nation’s accrediting body for cancer programs. St. Joseph Hospital achieved commendation status in all nine categories of the survey evaluation with no deficiencies cited.

In 2009 St. Joseph Hospital underwent a rigorous survey to become Orange County's first hospital and one of just 80 nationwide designated "Baby Friendly." According to research, hospitals that implement Baby-Friendly policies achieve higher breastfeeding rates - a practice proven to protect babies from illness and provide optimal nourishment. St. Joseph Hospital has ranked number one among Orange County hospitals for two consecutive years for the highest breastfeeding rates. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global effort undertaken by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). (more)
