James Harmon, Board of Trustees Chairman for 2008-2009

James Harmon established a thriving career in leisure and entertainment industry operations with a focus on, “helping organizations maximize the quality, value and efficiency of their operations, thereby meeting and exceeding visitor expectations of service and value.” That focus also rings true at St. Joseph Hospital where he serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“I am thrilled that Jim is chairing the Board of Trustees,” says Ray Casciari, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Immediate Past Chairman of the Board. “He shares St. Joseph Hospital’s mission and values, and when he speaks he commands everyone’s attention. He brings an amazing ability to analyze complex situations and make them understood and the path clear, as well as a wealth of business acumen.”

Mr. Harmon states, “I’m really honored to be on the Board, and I have big shoes to fill taking Dr. Casciari’s place. Being on the Board is a continual learning process. I look forward to becoming involved and partnering in many more facets of the organization, and hopefully providing insight on how to go from good to great. This is a tough business and it’s not getting any easier based on healthcare trends locally and nationally.”

He continues, “Not coming from the healthcare industry, I’ve been most impressed by the team effort of the Board, Executive Management Team, the hundreds of employees and hundreds of physicians, all sharing a special concern for people. What’s been accomplished at St. Joseph Hospital, on a national level, is truly remarkable.

Mr. Harmon earned his degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado, and spent the first 10 years of his career with the Disney organization in Denver and at Disneyland in Anaheim. In 1980 he co-founded Management Resources, providing marketing, operations, and business planning services for leisure time clients. Those clients have ranged from Disney to Universal Studios and Sony Development in the for-profit sector, to non-profits such as the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. He has been involved in seven World’s Fairs and two Olympics. Currently, his firm has projects throughout the United States and in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

The father of two grown daughters, Jim and his wife, Marilynn, have three grandchildren. They are active in Mariner’s Church in Newport Beach and the Assistance League of Tustin.

In addition to his 2006-2007 role as Vice Chairman of the Board, Mr. Harmon chaired the Planning Committee for two years and has served on the Finance, Benefits and Compensation, and Executive Committees. Officers serving with Harmon on the Board for the 2008-2009 term are: Sr. Theresa LaMetterey, CSJ, Vice Chair, and Sr. Judith Fergus, CSJ, Secretary.
