Outpatient Eating Disorder Program This is a six-hour a day program, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday often referred to as Partial Hospitalization (PHP). It is available to both males and females 17 years and older who are suffering with eating disorders. You will find our schedule on this website, please take the time to look at it. This structured program includes group therapy with a psychiatrist and licensed therapists, multi-family group therapy, medical nutrition therapy with an individualized meal plan, medical evaluation, cognitive behavioral therapy and supervised meals and snacks.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) IOP is a fewer hours of care per week; it includes approximately fifteen hours of treatment each week with all the services mentioned above. Both males and females at this level of care attend three hours a day, five days a week or three full days a week. IOP hours are arranged according to patient needs. All patients begin treatment with a full day of care (6 hours per day).
Weekly Meeting with Medical Director A weekly meeting with the medical director of the program is offered for both PHP and IOP levels of care. This meeting gives patients the medical support and knowledge that is needed to effectively manage medication and emotions. The Medical Director helps each individual examine what is effective and what adjustments may need to occur. Learning to be aware of personal challenges as weel as personal successes is a unique benefit of this experience.
Weekly Meeting with Registered Dietician A weekly meeting with the dietician is also offered at both levels of care. The weekly assessment with our dietician gives individual attention to each patient and is a time to devise an individualized meal plan. While reviewing the meal plan, patients learn strategies that will help them achieve their desired goals. This one-on-one time with the dietician helps each patient feel confident as new behavior and awareness is developing.
Recreation and Leisure Planning and Practice To insure balance in our eating disorder program, the recreational therapist helps individuals learn how to use their free time so that fun, enjoyment and laughter are part of daily life. Having balance goes hand in hand with making positive changes. The skills learned in recreational therapy can help the eating disordered patient manage free time and find alternatives to using the eating disorder behavior to fill unstructured or alone time.
Family Group Multi-family group is offered weekly for both levels of care. People in treatment are encouraged to attend, whether or not they have family members is available to attend with them. Family issues, dynamics and support are discussed in a supportive environment with a licensed, experienced clinician.
Outpatient Services Our Outpatient services include weekly Aftercare available to all who have received treatment at St. Joseph’s Eating Disorder Unit. This group is available at no cost for one year after discharging from our treatment program. If you choose to continue longer than one year, the cost is $10 per session. The focus of this group is relapse prevention, support and connection with others and with yourself. The group will address problems, concerns and successes.
We provide a Community Support Group. This group reaches out to the community to offer support, connection and resources. In this group, one can expect to learn more about eating disorders, the stages of recovery and treatment. This service is offered free to the community. This group is open and ongoing, however, to establish continuity and purpose in the group, it is recommended that individuals make a six-week commitment to attend.
