Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program
Signs and Symptoms

Patients may have no symptoms related to a congenital heart defect or symptoms may include:

  • tiring quickly
  • shortness of breath
  • unable to tolerate exercise
  • fainting spells, especially during physical activity
  • swelling in the legs and ankles

If you experience any of these symptoms you should see your doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms. In addition to the above symptoms, your doctor may hear a heart murmur or detect a cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) during a routine clinic visit. Your doctor will want to determine the reason for a heart murmur, arrhythmia or any of the symptoms listed above.
