Inpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy

inpatient.jpgSpecially trained Physical and Occupational Therapists on staff at St. Joseph Hospital guide patients through muscle-strengthening and range-of-motion exercises to help restore function, gain strength and manage pain. Therapists also focus on reducing stress, minimizing joint strain and conserving energy while assessing the need for equipment such as walkers and reachers, resulting in an appropriate and safe discharge.

Patients admitted to St. Joseph Hospital may be referred for physical, occupational or speech therapy by their doctors. Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery at St. Joseph Hospital receive physical therapy twice a day. Our therapists teach patients and their family members the safest and easiest way to get in and out of bed, sit and rise from a chair or toilet seat, and how to use a front-wheel walker on both level surfaces and steps.

Physical Therapists assist patients who are recovering from an illness, injury or surgery to regain mobility and strength. Our physical therapists will monitor any weight-bearing restrictions and other limitations. The patient will also learn therapeutic exercises that will help build strength and increase the range of motion in the joint.

Occupational Therapists help patients regain the ability to perform their normal activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing and eating. If a patient is having difficulty with communication, swallowing or eating, a Speech Therapist will help. Our occupational therapists will teach how to use special adaptive equipment that can enable the patient to bathe and dress on his or her own more easily.

The Acute Care Rehabilitation Department offeres a comprehensive orthopedic treatment plan, which includes pre-op classes for hip, knee and spine surgeries, as well as speciality programs in bariatrics, critical care, oncology and orthopedics. Rehabilitation staff assist in conducting gastric by-pass pre-operation classes and stress management classes for the community and post-operative classes for cardiac patients. For more information on these classes please call (7140 771-8204.

Inpatient rehabilitation also provides whirlpool wound treatments as prescribed by physicians. This service is scheduled on an individual basis.  For further details or to set up an appointment please call (714) 771-8204.
