Mammography

The National Cancer Institute estimates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Interestingly, it is estimated that approximately 46-52% of women living in Orange County are at high risk for developing breast cancer. The best way to fight this prevalent cancer is to detect its presence at its earliest stage. However, only 57% of women over age 40 in Orange County has had an annual mammogram in the past year (as recommended by American Cancer Society Guidelines). Mammograms are simple, affordable, and most importantly, make breast cancer screening and diagnosis more accurate than ever.

A screening mammogram is recommended for women who have no symptoms of breast cancer. The risk of developing breast cancer grows as a woman ages, so experts generally recommend that women begin screening with a baseline mammogram at the age of 40, and continue with mammograms every year thereafter. Women identified at increased risk for breast cancer may start screening earlier. Your physician can determine the best screening regimen given your age and risk factors. Women whose risk level is higher than average should seek expert medical advice about how early and how often to have mammograms.

St. Joseph Hospital's mammography facility is FDA approved and certified as meeting quality standards for equipment, personnel and practices under the Mammography Quality Standards Act. In addition, our facility is also approved by the American College of Radiology. Click here to view a complete list of our accreditations.
