After lung surgery, our patients are sent to the St. Joseph Hospital Rehabilitation Center for a specifically designed program to improve endurance for functional activities of daily living, self care and ambulation.
Generally the physicians would like patients to be able to walk for 30 minutes without difficulty. The treatment plan also includes education on pursed lip breathing techniques, posture awareness, monitoring of blood pressure, pulse, shortness of breath and oxygen saturation with walking, proper body mechanics, aerobic conditioning and a home program.
This is a two-part program that includes: respiratory therapy treatment for 30-35 minutes followed by physical therapy exercise treatment for another 30-60 minutes. The program is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8: 30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The initial session involves completing registration information, evaluations and light exercise.
Patients will need to wear or bring comfortable clothing and shoes for walking on a treadmill. If patients have been ordered by their doctor to use portable oxygen, they will be asked to bring it along.
