Urologic Oncology Program: Prostate

The St. Joseph Hospital Urologic Oncology Program takes a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and management of prostate cancer. By combining the best efforts of our highly skilled and compassionate robotic surgeons, radiation therapists, medical oncologists, pathologists, nursing and research staff, patients receive a comprehensive and state-of-the-art approach to their care. With the shift in cancer care from inpatient to the outpatient setting, navigating the components of care is more challenging than ever. Thus, the St. Joseph Hospital Urologic Oncology Program offers the following services and specialists to help prostate cancer patients on their journey:
  • Active surveillance
  • Bi-monthly Urologic Oncology tumor boards: The multidisciplinary team meets regularly in a tumor board to discuss each case and how best to treat in accordance with the National Cancer Center Institute (NCCN) guidelines as well as the individual needs of the prostate cancer patient and family.
  • Brachytherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Community Education Lectures/Support Groups
  • Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery or cryo
  • Hormonal Therapy
  • IMRT with IGRT technology
  • Medical Oncologists
  • Nurse Navigator: The ability to decide between treatment options, scheduling appointments, securing referrals and dealing with psychosocial issues can be a very overwhelming process. The Urologic Oncology Program Nurse Navigator at St. Joseph Hospital guides patients through their continuum of care and offers valuable support, guidance and education during and after their treatments.
  • Radiation Oncologists
  • More than 500 robotic prostatectomies have been performed at St. Joseph Hospital using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.
  • Urinary Incontinence Therapy: Our Physical Rehabilitation team offers therapy to assist men with urinary incontinence following treatment for prostate cancer. Biofeedback is utilized during the therapy sessions.
  • Urologists

Through the above services, "best practices" are implemented in the community hospital setting. Superior outcomes are achieved by providing the patient with care that is comprehensive, evidence-based and individualized.
