Early Detection of Lung Cancer

Bob Eames. -Volunteer, St. Joseph Hospital Regional The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment "I am very grateful that I took advantage of the opportunity to have the early Spiral CT screening test. The course of my life has been completely altered since I was diagnosed with lung cancer. The care I received at St. Joseph Hospital was overwhelming. After the diagnosis of lung cancer was confirmed, the steps to surgery were initiated in a very timely manner. The care from the nursing assistants to the physicians, and in-between, was very professional, with a loving human touch. I was so impressed that I have become a volunteer at The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital in order to give back a little bit of what I received. I would recommend early CT screening through the St Joseph Hospital Lung Program to any person who has a smoking history."

Spiral CT Lung Screening
Bob, a The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment volunteer and former smoker, enrolled in the National Lung Screening Trial protocol and received a spiral CT scan of the chest. A small lung nodule was found, which tested positive for non-small cell lung cancer. Bob had no symptoms associated with lung cancer. Because his lesion was detected early, his lung cancer was treatable. He enjoys a full recovery. Had Bob not had the early detection spiral CT screening test, his lung cancer may have gone undetected until much later. Many patients do not have any symptoms of lung cancer until the cancer has metastasized and treatment options are limited, with a poor prognosis or outlook.

Studies have shown that early detection of lung cancer can significantly improve the prognosis for someone found to have lung cancer.Spiral CT scanner. - St. Joseph Hospital, Orange California The St. Joseph Hospital Lung Program — in cooperation with Moran, Rowan & Dorsey Radiology group — specializes in, and promotes, the early detection of lung cancer through computed tomography (CT) screening and other diagnostic methods. Spiral CT lung screening may detect cancers not visible on chest x-rays, at a time when many of these cancers are still in the early stage with a high probability of cure. Preliminary reports from the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City show that using CT scans to screen for lung cancer "saves lives" and should be standard procedure for patients who are at high risk for the disease.

The St. Joseph Hospital Thoracic Oncology Program was recognized as a "best practice" model for our CT Screening approach to early diagnosis, at the 2005 Advisory Board Company's Oncology RoundTable annual symposium.

Who May Benefit From Spiral CT Lung Screening?

  • Those who are 50 years of age or older
         AND
  • who have smoked for 20 years or longer

If a diagnosis of lung cancer is confirmed, the physicians affiliated with the Lung Program will work with your own physician to determine the best treatment plan for you based on the type of cancer, stage of cancer and other factors.

    Lung Screenings Available
Because prevention and screening are such vital elements of lung health, the St. Joseph Hospital Thoracic Oncology Program is sponsoring a $125 spiral CT lung screening program for at-risk individuals. This special cash price can save patients approximately $300 in out-of-pocket expenses, as this screening is not covered by most insurance plans. This is a cash pay program; eligibility requirements must be met prior to screening and space is limited. To schedule a low-cost spiral CT lung screening, call 714-633-DOCS.
