Admitting Desk: weekdays (5:30 a.m., mornings and afternoons)

  • Provide assistance to patients, family members and visitors
  • Assist Admitting Staff with visitor inquiries, paperwork and deliveries
  • Escort patients and families to locations within the hospital

Ambassador (Outpatient Pavilion): weekday mornings and afternoons

  • Greet and direct patients, family members and visitors
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • Bilingual volunteers are a plus

CVSSU/South Lobby Visitor Management

  • Greet patients, family members and visitors
  • Issue visitor badges
  • Escort patients, family members and visitors to their destination

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Front Desk): weekdays

  • Greet and direct patients and visitors
  • Answer questions and escort as needed to destinations

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Infusion): weekdays

  • Make rounds to ensure infusion patients have what they need: water, blankets, reading materials or a short visit
  • Focus is listening to patients, not talking to them about personal experiences
  • Escort and direct incoming patients and physicians
  • Assist with clerical tasks as well as restocking supplies, cleaning patient chairs and folding linens

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Administration/MDC): weekdays

  • Assist with clerical tasks and projects

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Genetics): weekdays

  • Assist staff with clinical and research database data entry
  • Assist with clerical tasks and projects

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Radiation Oncology): weekdays

  • Assist staff with clerical tasks, such as answering telephones, data entry, making patient charts, filing, making follow-up calls and restocking supplies

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Registry): weekdays

The Cancer Registry monitors all reportable primary cancer cases diagnosed or initially treated at St. Joseph Hospital

  • Extensive data entry; requires high-level computer skills to support data collection
  • Assist staff with special projects

The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Research): weekdays

  • Assist staff with data entry and projects

Chronic Dialysis (Pediatric Activity Volunteer):

One year minimum commitment is required

  • Visit and provide activities such as craft projects and games for pediatric patients undergoing dialysis
  • Know age-appropriate play activities and games, as well as safety issues related to them
  • Assist with homework when needed

Clerical Positions: weekdays

  • Assist hospital staff with basic clerical duties (answering phones, filing, data entry, mailings, stocking supplies, etc.)

Clinical Research:

  • Important to have medical terminology knowledge or medical background
  • Assist staff with clerical duties (answering phones, filing, data entry, mailings, etc.)
  • Help staff prepare regulatory binders for new studies

Emergency Care Center (Greeter): mornings, afternoons and evenings, 7 days/week

  • Greet and direct patients, family members and visitors
  • Provide support to patients and family members by visiting with them and providing simple comfort items

Emergency Care Center (Main Unit): mornings, afternoons and evenings, 7 days/week

  • Round hourly and offer patients and family members comfort items such as blankets, water, etc. (with RN permission)
  • Clean empty treatment rooms

Endoscopy and Pain Management: weekdays from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.

  • Provide comfort items for patients (e.g., extra blankets, pillows, neck wraps)
  • Discharge patients, help turn around beds and run patient-related errands

Eucharistic Minister: mornings and afternoons, 7 days a week

PRE-REQUISITE: Must already be a Eucharistic Minister and have contacted the Spiritual Care Department

  • Distribute communion to patients, family and staff on assigned unites to those who desire to receive it

Gift Shops: (In-house) 7 days/week, including weekday evenings,

(Outpatient Pavilion and Cancer Center) weekdays

  • Required to have excellent customer service skills
  • Assist visitors, patients and employees with their purchases
  • Restock gift items
  • Use cash register and credit card processing machines

Kidney Transplant Center: weekdays

  • Assists with typical "messenger volunteer" tasks, such as specimens to labs, supplies from central, blood bank runs, etc.
  • Directs patients to the proper location
  • Helps with special projects
  • Assists transplant coordinator with patient orientations

La Amistad: weekdays

PRE-REQUISITE: Must be fluent in Spanish and English

  • Assist staff with clerical tasks, such as answering clinic telephones, data entry, filing, making follow-up calls and restocking supplies

Mammography: weekdays (Female Volunteers only)

  • Front office clerical duties
  • Escort patients to changing areas and assist those who request help
  • Ability to listen empathetically to concerned patients

Maternal Fetal Testing: weekdays

  • Front office clerical duties
  • Greet and assist patients when they arrive for appointments

Messenger Service

  • Varied patient-related errands, including patient discharges, delivering specimens to the laboratory and medical records, supplies and medications to the nursing units
  • Physically active position
  • Work with a team of volunteers

Mother Baby Assessment: Weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday mornings

  • Assemble patient charts and consent forms
  • Price items, stock boutique and ring merchandise
  • Help nurses set up patient rooms
  • Sign in people for classes
  • Answer telephones

Navigator: weekdays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; weekends 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Provide a warm welcome and hospitality to patients, family members and visitors by greeting and escorting them to patient rooms or other hospital destinations

Nursing Units:

  • General Surgery, Labor & Delivery, Medical Telemetry, Mother Baby Unit, Observation, Oncology, Orthopedics and Pulmonary Renal
  • Discharge patients
  • Assist with typical "messenger volunteer" tasks, such as specimens to labs, supplies from central, blood bank runs, etc.
  • Assist patient with settling into room environment
  • Assist unit secretary by answering phones and intercom
  • Make rounds to patient rooms to determine any pending patient needs
  • Escort ambulatory patients that would like to walk around the unit

OB Admitting

  • Greet patients and family members
  • Deliver armbands and paperwork to patients, assuring that they are correctly initialing and signing pertinent documents
  • Help at Birth Records Registrar

Occupational Therapy (Inpatient and Outpatient):

  • Shadow staff during patient therapy sessions
  • Assist department staff with basic clerical duties and restocking supplies

Outpatient Surgery Center Reception and Pre-Op (SPU): Tuesday - Friday

  • Greet patients, family members and visitors as they arrive
  • Assist patient with the signing in process
  • Escort patients to and from SPU
  • Weigh patients
  • Assist family members as needed
  • Assist with labeling patient charts and clerical duties
  • Wipe down and make up gurneys
  • Restock supplies

Outpatient Surgery Recovery (PACU): Tuesday - Friday

  • Escort/transfer patients to and from PACU
  • Wipe down and make up gurneys
  • Assist with clerical duties
  • Restock supplies

Personal Services Shampoo Volunteers

  • Shampoo and dry patients' hair
  • Excellent people skills required, compassionate and caring

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy Dogs must be certified through organizations such as Pet Partners or Therapy Dogs International and have a minimum of four months experience visiting with their handler in a nursing home or hospital setting.

  • Handler (owner) and dog visit with patients, visitors and staff throughout the hospital

Pharmacy

  • Deliver medications to nursing units
  • Assist staff with clerical needs
  • Assist with receiving and prioritizing physician orders
  • Verifies and puts away new medication shipments, except for narcotics
  • Restock medications

Physical Therapy (Inpatient and Outpatient):

  • Shadow department staff during patient therapy sessions
  • Assist department staff with basic clerical duties and restocking supplies

Puente A La Salud: weekdays

PRE-REQUISITE: Must be fluent in Spanish and English

  • Answer phone, assist with patient registration check in and check out process
  • Create new charts daily for new patients on mobile health clinic

Service Representative: weekdays

  • Provide support by visiting with patients in their hospital rooms and listening to any issues or concerns the patient or family members may have, immediately notifying a Service Representative of those concerns
  • Excellent opportunity to interact with a diverse group of patients and their families

Speech Therapy:

  • Shadow department staff during patient therapy sessions
  • Assist department staff with basic clerical duties and restocking supplies

Surgery Prep (In-patient) SPU: weekdays starting at 6:30 a.m.

  • Assist patients to their pre-op rooms
  • Escort/transfer patients to and from SPU
  • Assist with typical "messenger volunteer" tasks such as specimens to labs, supplies from central, blood bank runs, charts, paperwork, etc.
  • Assist family members as needed
  • Assist with phone calls, operating intercom system, light paperwork, etc.
  • Wipe down and make up gurneys
  • Restock supplies

Surgery Recovery (PACU): weekdays (until 7 p.m.)

  • Make rounds in patient treatment area to determine any pending patient needs
  • Escort/ transfer patients to and from PACU
  • Wipe down and make up gurneys
