Cath Lab Patient Instructions

Cardiovascular Short Stay Unit (CV-SSU) Information Sheet

Our Cath Lab schedules procedures on a “to follow” basis. This means that your procedure may be a bit later or even earlier depending on the length of the prior procedure. You will be kept updated on the progress.

Registering for Your Procedure

Pre-Registration should be done a few days in advance at the St. Joseph Hospital Outpatient Pavilion located at 1140 W. La Veta, Orange, CA 92868. The Pavilion is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The pre-registration process may take up to 1 hour to complete, so please plan accordingly.

You will receive a call from our CV-SSU RN, who will confirm your arrival time and answer any questions that you may have about your procedure.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding food and drink the day of the procedure. For patients who have not been given specific instructions from their doctor, do not eat any solid foods (including candy, mints, and gum) or drink 8 hours before the time of your procedure.

Contact your doctor about taking your diabetic medications, blood thinners such as Coumadin and instructions regarding the other medications and herbal medicine/supplements you take routinely.

Day of Procedure

Take all medications the morning of the procedure with sips of water; this includes your usual Aspirin, anti-hypertensive or anti-anginal medications.

On the day of the procedure, please use the assisted parking, available at the Emergency Department drop-off/pick up area at the corner of Pepper St. & La Veta Ave. It is important that you arrange to have a responsible driver, other than yourself, to drive you home when you are discharged from the hospital. Failure to have a driver will result in rescheduling your procedure.

Please check in and inform the Information Desk at the South Lobby that you are going to CV-SSU (Cardio-Vascular Short Stay Unit). You will be directed by hospital personnel to CV-SSU where a staff will be available to begin your care. You may not be the only patient scheduled at your appointed time, so you might have a brief wait in the CV-SSU waiting room. One person at a time may stay with you in the unit. Visitors may take turns and wait in the CV-SSU waiting room or South Lobby between turns.

The Emergency Department parking lot is for patients who are undergoing procedures and is available to you the day of your procedure only. If your driver needs to leave for any reason, or if you are spending the night or have visitors, they will need to use the hospital’s main parking structure on West Stewart Drive.

What to Bring

Please bring the following on the day of your procedure:

  • A list of your medications/supplements with dosages
  • A list of your allergies
  • A copy of your Advanced Directive (e.g., Durable Power of Attorney, Living Will or Living Trust)
  • You will need to present a map to our parking assistants on your procedure day for easy identification (click here to access the map).

If you have any questions, please call (714)771-8000 ext. 12969.

Thank you for allowing us to participate in your care.
