Non-Surgical Treatment

Non-surgical treatment may involve the following oral medications:

  • Medications called Alpha 1-blockers relax the muscles of the bladder and prostate allowing for easier urination. Alpha 1-blockers include: doxazosin, prazosin, tamsulosin, terazosin and alfuzosin, silodosin.
  • Finasteride and dutasteride act to decrease the levels of hormones produced by the prostate, reduce the size of the prostate gland and increase urine flow rate.
  • Chronic prostatitis, which is the inflammation of the prostate, may accompany BPH. Antibiotics combined with anti-infammatory agents may be prescribed to treat the inflammation.
