Radiation Oncology

Optune System

Optune is a novel cancer therapy that delivers alternating electric fields, called tumor treatment fields (TTFields) to slow or reverse the growth of tumor cells. It is FDA-approved for use in both newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma of the brain.

It is an outpatient treatment that can be prescribed as a single therapy, but is usually combined with chemotherapy. The Optune System consists of a portable electric field generator that delivers TTFields through surface transducer arrays worn by the patient throughout the day. The most common side effect of this non-invasive therapy is skin irritation. The Radiation Oncologists at St. Joseph Hospital are all certified prescribers of Optune.
