Your Hospital Bill

Thank you for choosing St. Joseph Hospital for your healthcare needs. We are honored to serve you in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. Our values of Dignity, Service, Excellence and Justice form the foundation for all we do and extend to our business services as well as the quality of care we provide.

During your hospitalization, you will be given only those tests and medications ordered by your physician. The daily rate you are charged for hospitalization includes your room, general nursing care, meals and support services. All physicians who treat you in the hospital are independent contractors and will bill you separately for their services. Thus, their fees will not be reflected in your hospital bill. You may be billed by your primary physician as well as your anesthesiologist, pathologist, radiologist, Emergency Department physician or any other physician(s) your doctor consults regarding your care.

To help you prepare for your hospital admission, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with your insurance benefits, coverage and "out-of-pocket" responsibilities. We will ask you for this information as part of the pre-admission and admission process. After you are discharged, we will bill your insurance company for payment. You will also receive a statement from us that provides you with the following information:

  • A summary of the charges for the care you received during your stay
  • Your billing address, according to our records
  • The insurance company we billed for your care
  • Your liability or out-of-pocket responsibility (provided this information was given to us during your stay)

If any of the information in the statement is incorrect, please fill out the perforated form on the bottom of the statement, and return it to us in the addressed, stamped envelope included with your statement. You can also call the Patient Financial Services department at (714) 568-5500.

Also, if you do not have health insurance coverage or you feel that your coverage is inadequate, you may qualify for St. Joseph Hospital's Patient Financial Assistance Program. To determine eligibility for the Financial Assistance Program, please contact a Financial Counselor at (714) 771-8185.

If you do not qualify for St. Joseph Hospital's Patient Financial Assistance Program, the hospital also offers a payment plan and a prompt-pay discount for self-pay patients. To discuss payment plans and prompt-pay discounts, patients should contact Patient Financial Services at (714) 568-5500.
