The new four-story St Joseph Hospital Patient Care Center, opened Sunday, October 14, 2007, combines the hospital's rich history with modern technology and medical innovation. As visitors approach the hospital, they encounter the inspirational words of one of the founding sisters, Mother Bernard Gosselin, etched into the glass exterior, reinforcing her message of hope to our patients and visitors. Details of the new Patient Care Center include:
- An underground tunnel, to join the Patient Care Center with the main hospital and CHOC, creating a holistic campus to serve patients' needs
- 14 new operating rooms to expand our surgical capacity to better accommodate the latest innovations in technology and medical equipment
- 150 beds, including 40 for patients needing intensive care
- An efficient and stress-free preoperative care area, a Perianesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and an additional CHOC short-stay unit
- The new Patient Care Center is seismically safe and sound, able to withstand a major temblor in our earthquake-prone region
- Private rooms for most patients, ensuring privacy during both difficult and exciting times. This has enabled us to extend visiting hours to 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Chris Layton, executive chairman of the Master Plan Campaign Steering Committee, said that foundations, corporate partners, generous individuals and hospital employees and volunteers all contributed generously to the $20 million fund to finance the new Patient Care Center. He continued, "We were overwhelmed by people's generosity and goodness. But I really think it is a result of the fact that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange are very generous in serving who they call the "Dear Neighbor" and in inviting the community to share in that ministry."
Hospital President and CEO Larry K. Ainsworth added, "The opening of the Patient Care Center marks an enormous milestone in St. Joseph Hospital's 78-year history. Thousands of people have had a hand in creating this building, unified in our mission to better serve the healthcare needs of our community today and well into the future."
