Proven Long-Term Methods for Weight Loss
Typically, diet, exercise and behavior modification result in only a 10
percent long-term weight loss -- they simply are not a long-term cure
for morbid obesity. Bariatric surgery is the only proven long-term method
of weight loss for individuals approximately 100+ pounds overweight.
However, it is important to remember that surgical weight loss is a tool
and not a permanent cure. To be truly successful, long-term weight loss
requires a lifestyle change in addition to surgery. The most successful
individuals are those who incorporate healthy eating habits and consistent
exercise into their new healthy lifestyle.
General Information About the Procedure
Surgeons with the St. Joseph Hospital Bariatric Surgery Program have been
specially trained by some of the most highly regarded physicians in the field.
Almost 100 percent of our bariatric surgery procedures are performed using
a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, which involves making several
small openings in the skin. Surgeons insert surgical instruments through
the openings, as well as a small camera to visualize the surgical area.
The laparoscopic approach offers several benefits, including:
- Quicker healing time
- Less blood loss
- Less post-operative discomfort
The sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric band are primarily restrictive
procedures that are performed using the minimally invasive laparoscopic
technique. Of these two procedures, the sleeve gastrectomy offers the
quickest weight loss and improvement of many diseases caused by obesity.
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery results in a new, smaller stomach, which restricts
the amount of food that can be eaten during meals. The adjustable gastric
band restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold by placing an inflatable
silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach.
Per the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons and the National Institutes
of Health, laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is the "gold standard"
for weight-loss surgery.
