Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)

Also known as: ECG

At Providence, we believe in empowering our patients and improving their well-being through comprehensive and precise screenings. By using electrocardiography to detect and treat heart abnormalities, our doctors help you take control of your personal cardiovascular health.

An electrocardiogram is a test that uses electrodes to record electrical signals from your heart.  The electrical signals detect your heart rate and rhythm and help your doctor accurately evaluate the heart’s function.

Electrocardiograms are valuable in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of cardiovascular conditions such as:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Arrhythmias
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

An electrocardiogram is a simple screening test. During the procedure, you will be asked to put on a hospital gown and lie on a hospital bed. Your EKG technician will place electrodes on your legs, shoulders and chest. These look like tiny stickers and attach to an EKG machine.

Your technician will then ask you to hold your breath for about 10 seconds. This allows the electrodes to accurately record any changes in the heart’s impulses.

The entire screening process takes approximately 10 minutes.

Electrocardiography is a safe screening procedure and carries little to no risks. You may feel slight discomfort when the electrodes are removed from your body, like tearing off an adhesive bandage. In order to yield precise test results, your technician may also shave the location where the electrodes are placed.
