Open Heart Surgery
St. Joseph Hospital is a leader in cardiovascular surgery. In fact, more
children and adults have open-heart surgery at St. Joseph Hospital than
at any other hospital in Orange County. Currently, we perform 375 open-heart
surgeries each year.
Our extremely low coronary bypass mortality rate of only 0.95 percent is
far better than the national average of 3 percent. Our postoperative complication
rates are also significantly lower than national averages for atrial fibrillation,
stroke, infection and necessary re-operations. This data is tracked through
the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), a national registry that open
heart programs benchmark against for outcomes.
As leaders in cardiovascular surgery, our specialized surgeons and highly
skilled team of clinicians use their expertise to provide both traditional
coronary artery bypass surgery and other state-of-the-art surgical procedures
such as valvular surgery, transmyocardial laser revascularization, surgery
for atrial fibrillation, and surgery for repair of congenital heart defects.
