For very large stones located in or near the kidney or when Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is unsuccessful, your doctor may perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy. This procedure involves removing the stone via a small tube (endoscope) that is inserted through a small incision in your back.
