3D Digital Mammography
The newest advancement in digital mammography is 3D Mammography, also referred to as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT). Traditional digital
mammography results in two dimensional images, in which overlapping tissue
can obscure the image making it difficult to identify problems in the
breast. Today, with advance imaging capabilities we are able to capture
standard mammography views and multiple angled views simultaneously making
3D mammography possible. 3D Mammography gives our breast specialists the
ability to see one millimeter slices throughout the breast, reducing issues
that were caused by overlapping tissue. The 3D image makes it easier for
our breast physicians to recognize normal tissue from abnormal tissue.
Research has proven that 3D Mammography not only results in a substantial
decrease in unnecessary second visits for additional imaging, but moreover,
significantly improves cancer detection.
The Center for Breast Imaging and Diagnosis is pleased to offer this latest
advancement in breast imaging to alleviate the inconvenience and anxiety
that comes with additional imaging, while improving our mission of early
cancer detection.
The medical experts of the Breast Program at the Center for Cancer Prevention
and Treatment, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,
the American College of Radiology and NCCN guidelines recommend that women
begin screening with a baseline mammogram at the age of 40, and continue
with mammograms every year thereafter. Women who have an increased risk
for breast cancer based on their family history may benefit from screening
at a younger age. Women who think they may be at high risk should consult
their doctor about the most appropriate screening regimen.
St. Joseph Hospital is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Our mammography center is
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and certified as meeting quality
standards for personnel, equipment and practices under the Mammography
Quality Standards Act.
